Discount & Sales Tax Calculator
Sale season maths, both directions: take a percentage off a price, or add sales tax to it. Switch modes below.
How it works
Discount: sale price = price × (1 − discount% ÷ 100), savings = price − sale price. Sales tax: tax = price × rate% ÷ 100, total = price + tax. Both round to cents.
Examples: $200 at 25% off: sale price $150.00, you save $50.00. $100 at 8.875% sales tax (New York City's combined rate): tax $8.88, total $108.88.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stack two discounts?
Not by adding the percentages: 20% then 20% is 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64, so 36% off total, not 40%.
Is sales tax charged on the discounted price?
Usually yes — tax applies to what you actually pay, so discount first, then tax.
Why do tax rates vary so much?
US sales tax combines state, county and city rates, from 0% in some states to over 10% in some cities. Always check the local combined rate.
How is a tax-inclusive price handled?
If the shelf price already includes tax, the pre-tax price is total ÷ (1 + rate). This calculator adds tax to a pre-tax price.
