Weighted GPA Calculator
Weighted GPA rewards harder courses: honors classes add half a point, AP/IB classes add a full point to the grade value before averaging by credits.
How it works
Grade values: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Weighted points per course = (grade + bonus) × credits, with bonus 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP/IB. Weighted GPA = sum of weighted points ÷ total credits. Unweighted GPA uses the same formula with bonus 0.
Example: AP A (3 credits), Honors B (3 credits), Regular A (4 credits): weighted points = 5×3 + 3.5×3 + 4×4 = 41.5 over 10 credits = weighted GPA 4.15; unweighted = 37 ÷ 10 = 3.70.
Frequently asked questions
Why can weighted GPA exceed 4.0?
Because AP/IB grades are worth up to 5.0. A student with all AP As can reach 5.0 weighted while unweighted stays at 4.0.
Do all schools weight the same way?
No. Some use +0.5/+1.0 like this calculator, some cap at 4.5 or 5.0, and some do not weight at all. Colleges usually recalculate on their own scale anyway.
How do plus/minus grades work?
This calculator uses whole-letter values (A = 4). If your school uses A− = 3.7, convert first or treat it as the nearest whole letter.
What about pass/fail courses?
Leave them out: pass/fail courses usually carry no grade points and should not enter either GPA.
